World Carfree Network - ICC

Present: Arie, Randy, Radka, Kamila, Steven, Vincent

Announcements:

  • Our 'Street Conversion Design Competition' has been announced and has a web page online. Randy is planning a related activity for Bogota, where paricipants will create designs on paper. The judging of the competition will take place on World Carfree Day at the Bogota conference. A group in the US called Rebar is planning a related competition for parking space conversions. Connections and cross-promotion of the two competitions are now being planned. The Youth Exchange in Bogota will have an activity where they design their own street conversions and they may be able to even implement a parking space conversion. We can also integrate the Rebar parking space conversion actions into World Carfree Day.

  • Kamila's Holidays: 3rd of August until 10th of August.
  • Radka is taking off July 31st until the 6th.
  • Kamila is making a holidays calendar for the office.
  • Randy is leaving tomorrow for Bogota and will be back on the 4th.

  • We didn't sell enough copies of the magazine. So, we will only print 2500 copies of the next issue.

Agenda:

  • August bulletin: We'll need a really good inspirational call-out for people to organise events and actions for World Carfree Day. The decision in Tabor was that Patrick was going to write one. We need to ask Steve about that. Also we'll need an announcement about the Street Conversion Design Competition. What else mustn't we forget to include? Also, it would be easier for the translators if the bulletin were shorter than last month's.
  • World Carfree Day: Could we review what was decided in Tabor regarding what we said we'd do for this year's event? Do we have the text from Patrick, the online forum, etc.? Should Arie do a press release? Yes, Arie will talk to Randy later about what to put in the press release about the competition. Other ideas are oil prices, climate change and stats about diving increases even when fuel prices are up. There should be a contact person in the bulletin about WCFD so that we can good reports. Roeland should be the contact person to collect news about planned WCRD events and reports after the fact. Arie can be the contact person for media.
  • The international planning for Nov. 4 actions against climate change are heating up significantly in Turkey and Western Europe. Arie hasn't been very successful in getting Czech organizations involved in doing something. Should we perhaps do a street breakfast, including hot tea and coffee for pedestrians on that day and do a press release that Czech organizations can join? We could also provide a fact sheet or press release template internationally that connect cars to climate change. We could also use one of the winning designs for parking space conversion. We could have a press conference during the Friday before the event and have a joint press release with other Czech groups linking cars and climate change.
  • EYF grants: We have decided to apply for an EYF grant for a youth exchange to Istambul. Roeland will write the grant. Randy will coordinate the participant groups. Arie will send him the guidelines about participants.

We also need to decide if we are toing to make a second application to EYF for a WCFD information campaign. We may also do an EYF application for another exchange such as something at Ecotopia on leadership developmetn or a winter workshop. Arie and Randy will try to develop a project concept.

  • Fundraiser and editor: What is happening with recruiting a new magazine editor and grant writer? Rob might be interested in working on the magazine from the US for a longer period. That shouldn't necessarily be a problem. Kamila asked him to decide as soon as possible. He is very good at it and says he's really enjoying it. We had an announcement in the bulletin and on the website about a fundraiser. We need to post ads on idealist.org, prague.cz, in the Globe and the Prague Post. Arie will design an ad and give it to Kamila for posting on the internet.
  • Funding ideas: Randy saw an article supposedly by Hugo Chavez about the evils of car culture in the Guardian. Should we Hugo Chavez a funding pitch? Also the guy who started Craigslist.org had an interview on the BBC. It's sort of an anarchist site that connects people to things for free. He answers all his e-mails so Randy will write a rough draft funding letter and Arie will help fine tune it.
  • Steven's work and hours: Steven will work 2 days a week for 10 hours each day and work on the Visegrad project and oversee the bulletin until the end of December or later depending.
  • Getting bikes back from ecotopia: There is no realistic way to send the bikes by train. If we go to Ecotopia with the van to get the bikes back it would cost up to 10,000 Kc and that is a better price than normal. We may have to sell a few of the bikes to offset the costs of the van. Randy and Steven would like to go to Ecotopia for a few days (probably 8th - 12th of Aug.) May be they could take the Slovak CARToons books for the Slovaks.
  • Office maintainance: Vacuuming>Vincent.
