We agree that in some cases it is neccessary and/or helpful. Kamila suggests that we go over agenda items, and the volunteers can choose to stay or go. If there are some items of interest, we can structure the meeting so that the information of interest to volunteers is covered first. If the volunteers want to be involved in making decisions, they can be. Randy says that there have been cases where volunteers have been very involved. The decision is that we should we put our agenda items and short description on the web by the end of the day Tuesday and volunteers can decide which items they want to be involved in discussing (but we think it is important to for volunteers to be as involved as possible). Randy suggests adding more interactive and visual agenda items to weekly meetings to make the meetings more interesting.

Kamila: EVS Candidates for May: One volunteer looked good, but now he doesn't answer contact. The other possible candidate is motivated to do EVS but not necessarily motivated specifically toward environmental issues. Should we go for this volunteer or wait until the next term? If we wait, it means that we won't have a second EVS between February and August. Randy says he will send an appeal to member orgs. Anna suggests checking the "last minute" Web site for EVS. Randy suggests that a member org. volunteer is best, and that we put out the word that the age limit rose to 30. The decision is that Kamila will ask the candidate for more information, Randy will appeal to member orgs and we will decide within two weeks. Vincent EVS final report: sent. Bas says he would like to learn about the Web and help with it. Jaoa will help him.

Changed lines 22-26 from:

to:
  • Welcome Bas (from Belgium) to World Carfree Network. Bas is our new EVS Intern. He will be here one year.

  • World Carfree Network USA: The people involved and Kamila and Christi agree that it should no longer go forward due to IRS inquiries. It seems impractical to pursue. Instead we will use the global network member Carfree City, USA as a conduit in situations where a funder requires 501c3 status. So, the web site should be changed.

  • International English School has staff interested in volunteering. Randy and Kamila will meet with someone from the school on Tuesday, January 16th.

Added lines 35-40:

Christi: Help with direct e-mail outreach and fundraising projects (i.e. benefit nights for the member org. and WCN both).

Kamila: Magazine? Contribute stories, etc. World Carfree Day?

Randy: What about Green Pages? Online work that can be done remotely, our EVS who handled it is leaving.

Changed lines 49-52 from:

Randy: If we're using the Polden-Puckham grant to cover my wages from April-August+ 2007, then I propose that we hire Justin Hyatt with the money that I would have otherwise received from WCN core funds. (After March, I do not need any core wages in 2007.) Again, we should let him know ASAP about the possibility of him working with us. We prioritised him as our first choice for new staff member at an earlier meeting. I'd be happy to work with someone on a job description/list of roles for him. If we can accept him at this meeting, I would propose deciding a specific start date as well. We will need to have a Steering Committee member to replace me on April 1, so I would suggest that date.

11. Should EVS come to meetings? We agree that in some cases it is neccessary and/or helpful. Kamila suggests that we go over agenda items, and the volunteers can choose to stay or go. 12. DG Environment Mobility Workshop The registration deadline for this Brussels workshop is Jan. 19th. We think we should send someone, but we don't know who will coordinate World Carfree Day yet. There is no registration fee. There will only be travel costs. It is in Brussels in early February. Randy suggests asking a Steering Committee member to go, for example Tom who is nearby. We don't really have money to cover travel costs. The decision is that we should ask a Steering Committee member to go.

Announcements

AGENDA

1. Steering Committee would like to assist with WCN projects

Randy: The Steering Committee would like to spend less time on procedural/bureaucratic issues and more time actually steering the network. As they see it, the best way to do this is to get involved in WCN projects and help steer them along. Do you have ideas for this? I would suggest that their energy is needed especially with the decentralised 'projects under development' initiated or revived in Tabor: the Carfree Area Pilot Project, the Carfree Indymedia site, the CarReality.tv site and the Carfree Ecovillage Project. Another possibility is boosting subscriptions to the bulletin (especially the non-English versions) and then trying to restart the Spanish and Italian versions. Any other thoughts?

2. Polden-Puckham grant for Autoholics Anonymous

Christi: Good news! We just heard that the Polden-Puckham Charitable Trust (based in the UK) will be granting us 5,000 GBP for Autoholics Anonymous. We are now waiting for our fiscal sponsor, Transport 2000, to draw up a contract with us. The original budget applied for was for 9,300 GBP - mostly for the project coordinator's and other contractors' wages (outreach, media, etc.), but also some for advertising. In the grant acceptance letter, Polden-Puckham just says the funds must be used "for the project described."

Randy: I'd like to propose that I use that for working on Autoholics in the UK for the equivalent of full-time for five months, starting April 1. If we receive the grant for the Mobycon/Carfree Communities project, which I've proposed to work on, the start date would be no sooner than July and so this would not be greatly affected.

3. Justin Hyatt as ICC staff member

4. Use of carfree_network list for project development

Randy: People have been noticing that discussion on the carfree_network list tends to go quiet during much of the year, and gets active whenever the decision of where to host the next conference is brought up. The list is supposed to be used for developing and seeking input on WCN projects (not just the conference). So I would strongly suggest that project coordinators make active use of the list. For example, we could be using it to seek themes for future issues of Carbusters, etc. To subscribe to the list, see www.worldcarfree.net/listservs/ (the list guidelines are there too). Could everyone in the office subscribe to the list? Any other thoughts on this?
