The International Center for Technology Assessment found in 1998 that Americans tax-payers pay between $4.60 and $14.14 per gallon more for gasoline because of "external" costs not reflected at the pump. (The range depends on which factors are considered, from road construction subsidies and higher health-care costs to military costs and environmental clean-up.) While Americans often worry that public transport requires too many subsidies, most never consider what roads and parking also cost at tax time. A recent study funded by the European Commission found that spending on road maintenance, lighting and policing is the equivalent of subsidizing private car use by between $100 and $400 per citizen per year.

I still would like a stat on US cities similar to the stat I have seen on European cities that says 50 percent of all journeys in the EU are under 5 km. Does anyone have a comparable US stat? (STeve says: "In North America, well over 50 percent of trips are under four miles" - see http://www.simpleliving.net/ecoliving/resource.asp?sku=EDYC)

This is the e-mail version, which is why it has caps on the headline. In the fax version with the WCN logo, it will be in our regular style, which is no caps but the headline in 20 point.

Arie says: will work that in.
