LONDON LEADING THE CHARGE AGAINST CONGESTION

London's much-debated congestion charging scheme came into effect February 17. To the delight of London Mayor Ken Livingstone, who had anticipated a "bloody day," rush hour road traffic in and around the charging zone resembled that of a Sunday morning.
   The London Transport Users Committee said it had given "three cheers" to the first two weeks of the scheme, claimed by Transport for London to have caused an estimated 25 percent drop in traffic levels, though a British automobile club estimated 60 percent. Overall, the number of vehicles in the charging zone dropped from 250,000 on a typical day to 190,000 on the launch day.
   About 90,000 drivers have paid the charge daily since it was introduced. Approximately 10,000 drivers who failed to pay the GBP 5 charge have received Penalty Charging Notices.
   London's congestion charging scheme, which cost GBP 200 million to set up and around GBP 80 million per year to operate, is expected to reduce traffic in central London by 10 to 15 percent and to improve journey times by 25 percent. Congestion costs London businesses an estimated GBP 4 million per week. The scheme is predicted to raise GBP 130 million per year to invest in improving London's public transport network.
   As the largest congestion charging scheme in the world, the events and experiences of London are being avidly followed by many other cities in the UK and beyond.

NEW "BULLET-RESISTANT" FORD

They don't call them bullet-proof, because that would be "misleading." The initials in the new Ford Lincoln Town Car BPS stand for "Ballistic Protection Series." But this opportunity to survive that first hail of bullets is being marketed at a significantly lower price than most armoured cars.
   Lincoln executives denied that they're cashing in on post-September 11 security fears, pointing out that work began on the model two years ago. But this is a sector of the industry which has been rapidly growing long before September 11, 2001: the wealthy fearing for their security is nothing new.
   The Town Car BPS goes on sale later this year; but it won't go alone. GM officials confirmed yesterday that they will offer a competitive model, probably a Cadillac DeVille armoured car, also scheduled to be released later in 2003.
   No figures for fuel mileage have been given for the 3.4-tonne vehicle.

SUDDEN BICYCLE PROVISION IN MELBOURNE

Starting around six months ago, inner-city councils in Melbourne, Australia, have started making mysterious amendments to all manner of parking and traffic restrictions. A large number of two-hour, one-hour and No Standing parking signs have been amended to read "Bicycles Excepted."
   Nearly all of the inner-city councils have been implementing these changes, however none were able to offer any comment when asked about the programme. "I'm sorry, I don't know what you're talking about; we haven't amended any signs," one council engineer responded.
   As a further bonus to bicyclists, several One Way, Speed Limit and No Entry Signs have been amended, as well as selected signs that prohibited bicyclists from riding in car parks, through parks and on greeways. It is hoped that city councils around the world will begin to follow Melbourne's example.
 

CYCLISTS THROWN OUT OF TRAINS IN GERMANY

A year ago it was announced that bicycles would no longer be carried on the fast ICE trains in Germany. Sixteen environmental organisations formally protested, but the move went ahead and now the German Cyclists Club (ADFC) launched a campaign called "Jetzt sind wir am Zug" ("Now we're on course": 'Zug' meaning both 'course' and 'train').
   Germany is famed throughout Europe for its integrated system of cycle tracks and its public transport. Bicycle provision was cancelled to try to make the ICEs run on schedule, however the exclusion of bikes hasn't made the ICEs more punctual than other services which do carry bikes. Karsten Huebener, ADFC chairman, has vowed to re-conquer the trains.

THE LATEST BUSH PUSH: SUBSIDIES TO SUVs & HYDROGEN

Resident Bush is throwing money around again, the lucky recipients this time being SUV buyers and his friends in the energy business.
   The New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported that another bonus of SUVs being so darn big is that they get the same tax breaks as pick-up trucks when bought by businesses. So executives finally get the benefit of buying something which might or might not be commercial equipment. The Bush administration saw that this was Good and proposed increasing this effective subsidy from US$1 billion to US$3 billion per year, allowing the whole cost, 100 percent, to be deducted from the company's income, which means less taxes paid. So small businesses: buy enough SUVs, pay NO TAXES! - provided you don't make more than $75,000 per year. And it must be a big SUV: more than 6,000 pounds (2.7 tonnes), and that means CONSUME MORE FUEL!
   Oh yes, it's a good time to be in the energy business. It's all happening. Bush announced a US$1.2 billion programme to develop hydrogen fuel cells, the Freedom CAR project, last month. The project injects taxpayer cash into the pockets of the biggest car producers in the US, in exchange for the possibility of getting in 2020 the hydrogen car we've been told about since the early 1990s. There are no definite targets set, though, nor are there any incentives to use renewable energy in hydrogen production. So, they'll be needing some more oil then.
 

THE DETROIT PROJECT: SAVING AMERICA FROM ITSELF

Pundit, columnist and author of the book "The Female Woman," Arianna Huffington is a professional outspoken critic of many things in Corporate America. She proposed the idea of a TV ad campaign based on the anti-drug adverts being run in the US, but instead venturing that oil money could also be financing international terrorism. There was a huge response to her column and the two ads have now been completed and aired, provoking a controversial discussion in US media.
   One of the ads intercuts people saying how much they like their car with boasts about the terrorist training camps they've funded. The other connects the dots between a simple US everyman called George filling up his SUV and the jubilant gun-wielding terrorists receiving the money. Both close with the message "Detroit: America needs hybrid cars now."

SUPPORT CYCLISTS' RIGHTS IN CALIFORNIA

Four civil cases have been brought against Berkeley police for incidents in 2000 and 2001 in which cycle activists were assaulted and property either destroyed, confiscated or both. Numerous activists have been left with ongoing medical symptoms from these attacks, many of which occurred without warning and appeared to be racially targetted.
   Many of these incidents were caught on video and form the basis of the strong legal case against the police department. Faced with a possibly lost case, the city attorney is dragging out proceedings. The Bicycle Civil Liberties Union <www.bclu.org> is calling for people in Berkeley, California, the US, or anyone else who feels that they can, to contact the city to demand that they settle the cases quickly and stop the interference in the lives of the activists involved. DOGS BUST CARS IN MUNICH

March 1, 2003, Germany: A pack of frenzied dogs attacked six parked cars in Munich, damaging them and causing panic among residents woken by the disturbance, the police said. Fenders, mud flaps and license plates were torn off. "It sounded like the cars were being broken into," said Günther Sailler, 63, a local goldsmith. "It was incredible. One of them leaped again and again with unbelievable force into the side of a car and bit into it like a lunatic."

CARNIVAL AGAINST OIL WARS AND CLIMATE CHAOS

JOB #1: BECAK DESIGNER

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) seeks an individual to work with the design team in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to develop a modernised becak (front-loading tricycle rickshaw). The initial contract is for two months of work during late spring/summer 2003, with the possibility of further terms depending on performance.
   The position will work with an existing design team including two technicians, a design assistant and a steering group, in relatively primitive conditions, temperatures in the 80s (around 30 Celsius), and using basic tools for welding, tube bending and general assembly. Salary dependent on qualifications, but trip cost, basic accommodation and medical expenses will be covered.

JOB #2: RISINGTIDE INTERNATIONAL CO-ORDINATOR

A one-year position is available with Rising Tide, an international network of activists taking action on climate change, in Oxford, UK. Responsibilities include organising the annual Risingtide international meeting, managing the e-groups, collecting news and producing a monthly e-mail bulletin (it's easy!), and a small amount of fundraising for future positions. These responsibilities should leave about half the co-ordinator's time free for other climate-change related projects.
   Applicants need to be eligible for the European Voluntary Service programme: under 26 and from an EU or EVS-affiliated country, and also have an understanding of the issues, a good working knowledge of English and be able to work independently. LONDRES MONTRE LA VOIE EN MATIERE DE TAXATION DES EMBOUTEILLAGES

Les mesures financičres de lutte contre les embouteillages ŕ Londres, longuement débattues, sont entrées en vigueur le 17 février.  Ce jour-lŕ, pour le bonheur du maire Ken Livingstone, qui s'attendait ŕ une "journée sanglante", le trafic aux heures de pointe dans les zones payantes et aux alentours ressemblait au trafic d'un dimanche matin.
   Le Comité des usagers des transports en commun de Londres a acclamé les deux premičres semaines qui, selon Transport for London, ont vu décroître de 25 % les niveaux de trafic - 60 % selon l'Automobile Club britannique. Le nombre de véhicules dans la zone payante est tombé de 250.000 (un jour normal) ŕ 190.000 (le 17 février).
   Depuis que la taxe journaličre de 5 Livres (7,5 Euros) a été introduite, environ 90.000 conducteurs l'ont payée chaque jour pour accéder au centre de Londres.  Environ 10.000 conducteurs qui ne l'ont pas payée ont reçu une
amende de 80 Livres (120 Euros).
   La mise en place de ce systčme londonien a coűté 200 millions de Livres, et son fonctionnement coűtera environ 80 millions de Livres par an. Grâce ŕ ce systčme de droit d'accčs des bagnoles, les Autorités de Londres escomptent une réduction de 10 ŕ 15 % du trafic au centre et une diminution de 25 % des temps de déplacement.  On estime que les embouteillages coűtent aux entreprises londoniennes 4 millions de Livres par semaine.
   Le projet est de prélever 130 millions de Livres par an pour investir dans l'amélioration du réseau des transports en commun londoniens.
   Nulle part ailleurs dans le monde, les droits d'accčs en bagnole ne sont aussi élevés, et l'expérience londonienne est observée avec le plus grand intéręt par beaucoup de villes au RU et ailleurs.

NOUVELLE FORD PARE-BALLES

Ils ne disent pas que c'est une voiture pare-balles, parce que ça pourrait faire mauvaise impression.  Le "BPS" de la nouvelle voiture de ville "Ford Lincoln Town Car BPS" signifie "Ballistic Protection Series" [Série Protection balistique].  Mais cette opportunité de survivre ŕ cette premičre gręle de balles est commercialisée ŕ un prix significativement plus bas que celui de la plupart des voitures blindées.
   Les cadres en charge des Ford Lincoln nient spéculer sur les appréhensions résultant des événements du 11 septembre.  Ils prétendent que le modčle BPS était ŕ l'étude depuis deux ans, et que ce secteur était déjŕ en croissance rapide dčs avant le 11 septembre 2001 : la crainte des riches pour leur sécurité n'est pas une chose nouvelle..
   La Town Car BPS sera mise en vente dans le courant de l'année.  Mais elle ne sera pas la seule.  Au début du mois, les officiels de General Motors ont confirmé qu'il allaient offrir un modčle compétitif, vraisemblablement une Cadillac DeVille blindée qui devrait sortir fin 2003.
   Aucune donnée n'a été fournie sur la consommation en carburant de ce véhicule de 3,4 tonnes.

MELBOURNE : MESURES INOPINEES EN FAVEUR DU VELO

Depuis environ six mois, les Conseils communaux (municipaux) de la ville de Melbourne en Australie ont entrepris d'appliquer de mystérieux amendements aux rčglements relatifs aux limitations du trafic et du parking des bagnoles.  Un grand nombre de signalisations pour les parkings interdits ou limités ŕ une ou a deux heures ont été modifiées : on peut y lire maintenant "Excepté vélos".  Pratiquement tous les Conseils communaux ont effectué ces modifications.  Cependant, aucun d'entre eux n'a pu donner de commentaire quand on les interrogeait sur cette démarche.  Un ingénieur d'un Conseil a répondu : "Désolé, je ne sais pas de quoi vous parlez; nous n'avons modifié aucun panneau de signalisation".
   Bonus supplémentaire pour les cyclistes, plusieurs panneaux signalant des sens uniques, des limitations de vitesse et des interdictions d'accčs ont été modifiés de la męme façon, et aussi certains panneaux qui signalaient l'interdiction de la circulation des vélos dans des parkings pour autos, dans des parcs et autres voies vertes.
   On peut espérer que les Conseils communaux du monde entier vont se mettre ŕ suivre l'exemple de Melbourne.
 

ALLEMAGNE : VELOS EXCLUS DES TRAINS

Il y a un an, on a annoncé que l'on ne pourrait plus emmener son vélo dans les trains rapides ICE en Allemagne.  Seize organisations environnementalistes ont protesté formellement, mais le mouvement a été de
l'avant et maintenant le Club des cyclistes allemands (ADFC) a lancé la campagne "Jetzt sind wir am Zug" (jeu de mots basé sur le double sens de "Zug" : "Nous sommes maintenant sur le train/en bonne voie").
   L'Allemagne est réputée en Europe pour son systčme intégré de pistes cyclables et ses transports publics.  La mesure d'interdiction actuelle a été instaurée dans l'espoir de permettre aux ICE de respecter leurs horaires.  Cependant, l'exclusion des vélos n'a pas apporté aux ICE plus de ponctualité qu'aux autres services autorisant les voyageurs d'emmener leur vélo.  Karsten Huebener, présidant de l'ADFC, a promis la reconquęte des trains.

NOUVEAUX GASPILLAGES DE BUSH : SUBSIDES POUR LES VUS ET L'HYDROGENE

Le président Bush est de nouveau en train de gaspiller l'argent du contribuable.  Cette fois, les heureux bénéficiaires sont les gens qui achčtent des "véhicules utilitaires sportifs" (VUS) [Sport Utility Vehicles
(SUV)] et leurs copains marchands de pétrole.
   Selon le New York Times et le Wall Street Journal, un nouvel avantage des VUS dű au fait qu'ils sont énormes est que, lorsqu'ils sont achetés par une entreprise, ils bénéficient des męmes détaxations que les pick-up (camionnettes ŕ plateau).  Ainsi, les cadres d'entreprise peuvent tirer profit de l'achat d'une de ces choses, que ce soit pour un usage professionnel ou non.  L'administration Bush voit lŕ un grand bienfait.
   Elle a proposé d'augmenter ce subside d'un ŕ trois milliards de dollars par an en permettant de déduire du montant imposable des entreprises l'entičreté (100 %) du prix d'achat des VUS.  Donc, petites entreprises, achetez suffisamment de VUS, et vous ne payerez plus d'impôts - du moment que vous ne faites pas plus de 75.000 dollars par an.  Et n'oubliez pas qu'il faut que ce soient des énormes VUS - plus de 2,7 tonnes - et que ça implique une plus grande consommation de carburant !
   Oh oui.  C'est vraiment le bon moment de faire des affaires dans le secteur de l'énergie.  C'est maintenant que ça se passe.  En février, Bush a annoncé le projet "Freedom CAR" [Bagnole Liberté], un projet de 2 milliards de dollars pour le développement de cellules ŕ hydrogčne.  Ce projet détourne l'argent du contribuable dans la poche des plus grands constructeurs d'automobiles en vue d'une éventuelle mise en service en 2020 des voitures ŕ hydrogčne dont on nous parle depuis le début des années '90. Il n'y a cependant pas d'objectifs bien définis, et il n'y a pas non plus d'incitants ŕ l'utilisation d'énergies renouvelables dans la production de l'hydrogčne.  Il va donc falloir utiliser plus de pétrole.
 

PROJET DE DETROIT : SAUVER L'AMERIQUE D'ELLE-MEME

Experte, chroniqueuse, et auteur du livre "The Female Woman" [La femme féminine], Arianna Huffington est un critique professionnel qui ne mâche pas ses mots lorsqu'elle parle de l'Amérique des entreprises.  Elle a suggéré l'idée d'une campagne publicitaire ŕ la télévision inspirée des publicités US anti-drogue, mais suggérant plutôt que l'argent du pétrole pourrait aussi bien financer le terrorisme international.  Il y a eu de nombreuses réactions ŕ sa chronique, et deux spots "publicitaires" sont maintenant diffusés, ce qui provoque une débat acharné dans les médias américains.
   Un des spots entrecoupe des scčnes oů des gens disent combien ils aiment leur cage avec des vues fanfaronnes de camps d'entraînements terroristes qu'ils ont aidé ŕ financer.  L'autre établit un lien entre un Américain moyen appelé Georges qui remplit son VUS et des terroristes armés recevant l'argent avec jubilation.
   Les deux spots se terminent par le message "Detroit : l'Amérique a besoin de voitures hybrides maintenant."

CALIFORNIE : DEFENSE DES DROITS DES CYCLISTES

Quatre procčs ont été intentés au civil contre la police de Berkeley pour des incidents de 2000 et 2001 oů des activistes cyclistes ont été agressés par la police et ont vu leurs vélos démolis ou confisqués.  Suite ŕ ces agressions, dont beaucoup perpétrées sans crier gare et visant des gens "de couleur", de nombreux activistes ont gardé séquelles physiques.
   Bon nombre de ces incidents ont été filmés en vidéo, et les cassettes sont ŕ la base du procčs contre la police.  Comme cette derničre risque fort de perdre le procčs, l'avocat de la Ville fait traîner la procédure.  La Bicycle Civil Liberties Union (BCLU) en appelle aux gens de Berkeley, de Californie, des Etats-Unis - et de tout qui, dans le monde entier, peut le faire - pour qu'ils demandent aux autorités de la ville de Berkeley de régler rapidement cette affaire et de mettre fin aux ingérences dans la vie
des activistes impliqués.

MUNICH : DES CHIENS S'ATTAQUENT A DES BAGNOLES

LONDON FÜHRT DEN ANGRIFF GEGEN DEN STAU

Londons umstrittenes Stau-Maut-System trat am 17. Februar in Kraft. Zur großen Freude von Bürgermeister Ken Livingstone, der mit einem chaotischen Tag gerechnet hatte, glich der Verkehr in und nahe der Mautzone dem eines Sonntagmorgens.
   Der Londoner Fahrgastverband gab den ersten zwei Wochen des Mautsystems ein "dreifaches Hurra". Nach Aussage der Londoner Verkehrsbetriebe entstand eine Verminderung des Straßenverkehrs um 25%, ein britischer Automobilclub hingegen schätzte diese auf 60%. Insgesamt sank die Zahl der Fahrzeuge in der Mautzone von 250.000 an einem typischen Tag auf 190.000 am Starttag.
Etwa 90.000 Autofahrer haben die Maut seit dem Inkrafttreten täglich bezahlt. Ungefähr 10.000 Fahrer, die die Maut von 5 Pfund nicht bezahlt hatten, haben Mahnungen erhalten.
   Londons Staumautsystem, dessen Aufbau 200 Millionen Pfund kostete und dessen Betrieb etwa 80 Millionen Pfund pro Jahr kosten wird, soll den Verkehr in der Londoner Innenstadt um 10-15% verringern und Fahrzeiten um 25% verbessern. Staus kosten Londoner Unternehmen schätzungsweise 4 Millionen Pfund pro Woche. Die Maut soll voraussichtlich 130 Millionen Pfund pro Jahr einbringen, welche in Verbesserungen der öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel in London investiert werden sollen.
   Als größtes Staumautsystem der Welt werden die Ereignisse und Erfahrungen in London von vielen anderen Städten inner- und außerhalb Großbritanniens mit Begeisterung verfolgt.

NEUER "KUGELRESISTENTER" FORD

Als kugelsicher werden sie nicht bezeichet, denn dies könnte "irreführend" sein. Das Kürzel im Namen des neuen Ford Lincoln Town Car BPS bedeutet "Ballistic Protection Series" (Geschoss-Schutz-Serie). Diese Möglichkeit, den ersten Kugelhagel zu überstehen, wird jedoch zu einem wesentlich geringeren Preis vermarktet als die meisten Panzerfahrzeuge.
   Die Chefs von Lincoln dementieren, Geschäfte mit den durch den 11. September entstandenen Sicherheitängsten machen zu wollen - mit dem Hinweis darauf, dass die Entwicklung dieses Modells vor zwei Jahren begonnen wurde. Dies ist jedoch ein Marktsegment, das schon lange vor dem 11. September 2001 rapides Wachstum genoß: die Sorge der Reichen um ihre Sicherheit ist nichts Neues.
Das Town Car BPS wird später in diesem Jahr zum Verkauf angeboten - jedoch nicht allein. General Motors bestätigte gestern, dass sie ein Konkurrenzmodell anbieten werden, wahrscheinlich einen gepanzerten Cadillac DeVille, und zwar ebenfalls im späteren 2003.
   Angaben zum Spritverbrauch des 3,4-Tonnen-Fahrzeugs wurden keine gemacht.

PLÖTZLICHE AUSNAHMEREGELUNGEN FÜR RADFAHRER IN MELBOURNE

Seit etwa 6 Monaten haben die Bezirksräte in Melbourne, Australien, mysteriöse Änderungen an Verkehrs- und Parkbeschränkungen aller Art vorgenommen. Eine Vielzahl von Schildern für 2- oder 1-stündige Höchstparkdauer oder absolutes Halteverbot lautet nunmehr zusätzlich: "Ausgenommen Fahrräder".
   Die Änderungen sind in fast allen Stadtbezirken umgesetzt worden, keine der Bezirksverwaltungen konnte dazu jedoch auf Anfrage jegliche Angaben machen. Der technische Leiter einer Bezirksverwaltung: "Es tut mir leid, ich weiss nicht, wovon Sie reden - wir haben keinerlei Schilder geändert."
   Als weiterer Bonus für Radfahrer wurden auch einige Einbahnstraßen-, Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungs- und Einfahrtverbotsschilder geändert, sowie ausgewählte Schilder, die das Radfahren auf Parkplätzlich und durch Parks und Grünanlagen verboten. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass Stadtverwaltungen weltweit dem Beispiel von Melbourne folgen werden.
 

RADFAHRER FLIEGEN IN DEUTSCHLAND AUS ZÜGEN

Vor einem Jahr wurde angekündigt, dass in Deutschland in den schnellen ICE-Zügen keine Fahrräder mehr transportiert werden. Sechzehn Umweltverbände protestierten hiergegen, aber die Maßnahme kam zustande. Nunmehr hat der Allgemeine Deutsche Fahrradclub (ADFC) die Kampagne "Jetzt sind wir am Zug" gestartet.
   Deutschland ist europaweit für sein integriertes Netz aus Radwegen und öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln bekannt. Die Fahrradmitnahme wurde gestrichen, um die Pünktlichkeit der ICEs zu verbessern - der Ausschluß von Fahrrädern hat jedoch zu keiner besseren Fahrplantreue der ICEs im Vergleich zu Zügen mit Fahrradbeförderung geführt. ADFC-Vorsitzender Karsten Hübener hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Züge zurückzuerobern.

DER LETZTE "BUSH PUSH": SUBVENTIONEN FÜR GELÄNDEWAGEN UND WASSERSTOFF

Bush wirft mal wieder mit Geld um sich, und die glücklichen Empfänger sind diesmal Geländewagenkäufer sowie seine Freunde im Energiegeschäft.
   Wie die New York Times und das Wall Street Journal meldeten, ist es ein weiterer Vorteil der schieren Größe der Geländewagen, dass Unternehmen bei deren Kauf die gleichen Steuerermäßigungen wie für Kleinlaster genießen. So bekommen die Firmenchefs endlich den Vorteil, etwas zu kaufen, was Firmenausrüstung sein kann oder auch nicht.
   Die Bush-Regierung fand das prima und schlug vor, diese effektive Subvention von jährlich 1 Milliarde US-$ auf 3 Milliarden US-$ zu erhöhen, wobei die Gesamtkosten zu 100% vom Firmeneinkommen abgezogen werden können, was eine geringere Steuerschuld bedeutet. Also, Mittelstandsunternehmer: kauft nur genug Geländewagen und zahlt KEINE STEUERN! - vorausgesetzt, Sie verdienen nicht mehr als $75.000 pro Jahr. Und es muss schon ein großer Geländewagen sein - mindestens 2,7 Tonnen, und das bedeutet MEHR SPRITVERBRAUCH!
   Und noch was: es sind prima Zeiten, im Energiegeschäft zu sein. Jetzt kommt's. Letzten Monat hat Bush ein 1,2-Milliarden-US$-Programm für die Entwicklung wasserstoffbetriebener Brennstoffzellen angekündigt. Dieses Projekt schiebt Geld der Steuerzahler in die Taschen der größten Autohersteller in den USA, und man erhält dafür die eventuelle Möglichkeit, 2020 endlich das Wasserstoffauto zu bekommen, von dem uns seit den frühen 1990er Jahren erzählt wird. Festgesetzte Ziele gibt es keine, und jegliche Anreize, für die Wasserstoffproduktion erneuerbare Energien einzusetzen gibt es ebensowenig. Also wird dann wohl noch etwas mehr Öl benötigt werden.

 
DAS DETROIT-PROJEKT: AMERIKA VOR SICH SELBST RETTEN

Die Kolumnistin und Verfasserin des Buches "Die weibliche Frau", Arianna Huffington, ist eine professionelle, unverblümte Kritikerin von amerikanischen Großkonzernen. Sie schlug eine Fernsehwerbekampagne nach Vorbild der derzeit in USA laufenden Anti-Drogen-Spots vor, in der jedoch stattdessen verdeutlichet werden sollte, dass mit Geld vom Öl auch der internationale Terrorismus finanziert werden kann. Dies stieß auf enorme Resonanz, und zwei Werbespots sind inzwischen produziert und ausgestrahlt worden, was eine kontroverse Diskussion in den US-Medien nach sich zog.
   Ein Werbespot vermischt die Aussagen von Leuten, wie sehr ihnen ihr Auto gefällt, mit Prahlerei darüber, welche Terroristen-Trainingslager sie finanziert haben. In einem anderen werden die Punkte verbunden zwischen einem amerikanischen Jedermann namens George, der seinen Geländewagen volltankt, und glücklichen, bewaffneten Terroristen, die das Geld bekommen. Beide Spots enden mit der Botschaft: "Detroit: Amerika braucht jetzt Hybridautos.

UNTERSTÜTZT RADFAHRERRECHTE IN KALIFORNIEN

Gegen die Polizei in Berkeley hat es vier zivilrechtliche Anklagen gegeben wegen Fällen in 2000 und 2001, in denen Fahrrad-Aktivisten angegriffen und deren Eigentum zerstört oder beschlagnahmt wurde (oder beides). Zahlreiche Aktivisten trugen von diesen Angriffen bleibende körperliche Schäden davon. Viele dieser Angriffe geschahen ohne Vorwarnung und richteten sich offenbar gegen bestimmte Rassen.
   Zahlreiche dieser Vorfälle wurden auf Video aufgezeichnet, woraus sich eine starke Beweislage gegen die Polizei ergibt. Angesichts eines offensichtlich aussichtslosen Falles zögert die städtische Anwaltschaft die Verhandlungen hinaus. Die Radfahrer-Zivilrechtsunion (Bicycle Civil
   Liberties Union <http://www.bclu.org>) ruft Personen aus Berkeley, Kalifornien/USA (oder jeden anderen, der sich hierzu in der Lage sieht) auf, sich mit der Forderung an die Stadt zu wenden, die Fälle zügig abzuschließen und die Beeinträchtigungen der betroffenen Aktivisten zu beenden. HUNDE RAMPONIEREN AUTOS IN MÜNCHEN

1. März 2003, Deutschland: Laut Polizei griff eine Meute wahnsinniger Hunde sechs geparkte Autos in München an, beschädigtie diese und sorgte für Panik unter den aus dem Schlaf gerissenen Anwohnern. Kotflügel, Schmutzfänger und Nummernschilder wurden abgerissen. "Es hörte sich an, als ob in die Fahrzeuge eingebrochen wurde," sagte Günther Sailler, 63, ein örtlicher Goldschmied. "Es war unglaublich. Einer von denen sprang immer wieder und wieder mit unglaublicher Wucht in die Seite eines Autos und biss wie verrückt hinein."

Das britische SchNEWS-Jahrbuch 2003 wird derzeit erstellt und wir bitten um Material: Fotos und kurze Berichte von Aktionen und Ereignissen, Zeichnungen, Werbe-Verulkungen - sowie um Leute, die das beim Zusammensetzen der ganzen Sache helfen.
   Das Buch wird aussehen wie eine Satire über Kinder-Comic-Jahrbücher, wobei Nachrichten auf ulkige Weise verkleidet werden, um neues Publikum zu erreichen. Wir interessieren uns besonders für Artikel über Leute, die in Projekten involviert sind, die wirklich Wege zu einer weitreichenden nachhaltigen Zukunft aufzeigen.

FEIER GEGEN ÖLKRIEGE UND KLIMACHAOS

Nehmt euch den Tag frei un kommt nach London zur Hauptversammlung von BP am 24. April in der Königlichen Festhalle. Kommt und sagt NEIN zu Blutiger Politik (BP drängt auf ein großes Stück vom Kuchen des irakischen Öls), zu Britischer Plünderung (Pipelines in Kolumbien, Tibet, Alaska und West-Papua) und zum Brennenden Planeten.
   Dies wird eine Feier der vielen sicheren, nachhaltigen und sozial gerechten Zukünften, die vor uns liegen könnten. Auf dem Weg zur Hauptversammlung gibt es eine Kundgebung, eine alternative Hauptversammlung sowie die Veröffentlichung eines alternativen BP-Jahresberichts der zum ersten Ziel hat, der Illusion der "guten" Ölfirma entgegenzuwirken. STELLENANGEBOT NR. 1: BECAK-DESIGNER

Das Institut für Verkehrs- und Entwicklungspolitik (Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, ITDP) sucht einen Mitarbeiter in einem Entwicklungsteam in Yogyakarta, Indonesien für die Entwicklung eines modernisierten Becak (von vorne beladene Dreirad-Rikscha). Der Vertrag ist zunächst auf zwei Monate im späten Frühjahr oder Sommer 2003 befristet, eine leistungsabhängige Verlängerung ist möglich.
   Der Mitarbeiter wird in einem vorhandenen Designteam mit zwei Technikern, einem Designassistenten und einer Führungsgruppe arbeiten, unter relativ primitiven Bedingungen bei Temperaturen um 30 Grad und mit einfachen Werkzeugen für Schweißen, Rohrbiegen und allgemeine Montage. Die Bezahlung richtet sich nach den Qualifikationen. Reisekosten, einfache Unterbringung und Gesundheitskosten werden jedoch gedeckt.

Rising Tide, ein internationales Netzwerk von Aktivisten gegen Klimaveränderung, bietet eine auf ein Jahr befristete Stelle in Oxford, Grossbritannien an. Zu den Aufgaben gehören die Organisation der internationalen Jahresversammlung von Risingtide, die Verwaltung der E-Gruppen sowie das Sammeln von Nachrichten und Produzieren eines monatlichen Email-Rundschreibens (das ist einfach!), sowie ein wenig Mittelbeschaffung für künftige Stellen. Diese Aufgaben sollten dem Koordinator etwa die Hälfte der Zeit für anderweitige Projekte zu Klimaveränderungsthemen frei lassen.
